This edition’s reminders:

Beavers

Joint session –  this week, on Wednesday 3rd October, all three Beaver colonies will be having a joint meeting at Wortley Rugby club.

Cubs

Alegre – the cubs will be taking part in a Trading Post activity. It’s their chance to make a virtual fortune.

Bella Vista  –  please meet at the scout hut at our normal time in full uniform. We will be working towards the cub’s teamwork challenge badge.

Raptors  –  will be outside for a map reading challenge. Please make sure your cub has dressed appropriately, has a water bottle and a torch. Start and end times as normal; so we can maximise our time, can you please make sure your cub has used the toilet before drop-off?

Scouts

Enigma – on Monday 1st October, scouts need to please attend in full uniform. We have South Yorkshire Police visiting the young people, hosting an information evening around drug awareness as part of the Chief Scout Gold Award. In addition, Enigma scouts will be meeting on Friday 5th (with Viernes) at Wortley RUFC – this is in lieu of Monday 8th Oct.

Wibbles   –  will be cooking on “penny cans”. As per Alison’s email, please can each scout bring with them a clean/empty food can.

Viernes – are meeting at Wortley RUFC (with Enigma) for a rugby taster session. Please see the link for details.

Explorers

We will be out for a wide game this week. Please make sure you wear suitable clothing (including proper footwear!), especially now the evenings are getting cooler, and bring with you a torch.

Everyone

  • Steve Roach formally retired from his role of 37 years as Group Scout Leader of Penistone Scouts at the Annual General Meeting on Monday. We are delighted to note that he and daughter, Susie (a cub leader at Penistone) will be fundraising for Diabetes UK by taking on Mount Kilimanjaro. If you can support them through sponsorship, please take a look at the following post for more information.
  • Shauna and Rob will be packing away the tents we’ve left drying at the Scout Hut following group camp. We’ll be doing this from 5:30 pm on Monday 1st Oct because we need the space back for Engima’s troop meeting. If you can help us pack the tents away, please come down from 5:30. Thank you in advance.

Jamboree

The Jamboree team have arranged a Ceilidh for Saturday 13th October at Thurgoland village hall. This event is open to everyone, all proceeds going to the Jamboree funds and will be a great family occasion. Please see the dedicated event post for full details.

Leaders

First Aid training – Just a reminder that we have some spaces remaining on the adult first aid training course (4th Nov). For details of how to book a place, please see the dedicated event here.

With the reminders out-of-the-way, let’s recap the week.

This week:

Group camp

It was our annual group camp this weekend. Over 150 young people had a fantastic time taking part in a raft of activities. We had a dedicated event team on site over the weekend. Thank you to everyone who helped make this a successful camp, from the planning/organisation, pre-camp set-up/tent pitching, over the weekend and after the event. A particular thank you to parents/guardians for working with us on the drop off / collection process. Lost property will be photographed and shared as soon as possible. You can look back over the photos at the following pages: Edition 1, Edition 2, Edition 3Edition 4 and Edition 5.

Annual General Meeting

On Monday, we held the group’s annual general meeting. As we’ve already alluded to, Steve Roach retired from his role as Group Scout Leader of the past 37 years. In addition, Matt & Andrea Whitehead resigned their executive committee roles. We would like to thank them all for their valued contributions. Steve remains part of the group as a member of the Group Active Support Unit (Falcons). A number of new appointments were made to the executive committee, with the renewal of several existing positions. A full report will be made available at a later date along with a refreshed/simplified outline of the group sections and structure.

Boomers learnt to sew

Our Young Leader has been putting some of her college work into practice and taught the beavers how to sew.

Wibbles stopped the show

Wibbles troop had the final of Great Scout Bake Off on Wednesday evening and it was absolutely AMAZING! The standard of the showstoppers was very high and every single scout put in maximum effort and should be very proud of themselves. A huge thanks should go to parents and guardians for inspiration and support with ingredients for decorating and hopefully, you all got chance to sample the creations. Well done to Cormac the overall winner but the judges found it very difficult to choose. Every scout in the troop took part and all should be commended for their efforts! Well done!

Sorry we didn’t get a picture

Lots of other activities took place this week, but we didn’t necessarily get a photo:
  • Enigma successfully completed their Walk for WaterAid challenge involving carrying water to Scout Dyke and back to highlight water poverty in the world.
  • Castor beavers had an evening focused on safety
  • Alegre met at GoOutdoors in Wakefield
  • Raptors and Bella Vista helped set-up tents at Group Camp
