Viernes are working towards their Cycling badge this and next week. On the 22nd we will be meeting at the Scout Hut then walking up to Cycle Penistone. On the 29th, the scouts will be riding their bikes to Dunford Bridge and back. (Scouts need to attend both weeks to attain their badge).

Viernes “GoCardless” – Our Friday scout troop continue to trial the online payment system. There are a couple of bugs/challenges around automated payment reminders going to parents/guardians when we’ve taken cash or a cheque; we’re working to address this. Additionally, when a young person is transferred to another section (in our case, scout becomes explorer) the ad hoc payment method GoCardless provides auto cancels. This does not affect monthly subs – it’s a “feature!”

Black Country (Summer camp) – The final monies for our summer camp to the Black Country are now overdue. Thank everyone who has been working with us to get their monies in. Please contact your section leader if you are unaware of how much you’ve left to pay for your scout.

Explorers

Explorers are doing some Duke of Edinburgh training; please look out for individual emails that’ll include further details.

Everyone

Scouttastic – monies for Scouttastic now very overdue and need to please be paid to your Section Leaders. Reminder emails and messages will have been going to parent/guardian registered email addresses – the event is a handful of weeks away.

With the reminders out of the way, let’s recap the week.

This week:

Late Spring camp

Our Friday scouts had a one night camp at Silverwood. The weather wasn’t forecast to be dry, but it thankfully held for us. With tents pitched, the scouts headed out on a wide game before a hot-dog supper. On Saturday morning they cooked their own breakfast on open fires (bacon, beans and a variety of egg (scrambled, fried and eggy-bread!) before some free time whilst our Beavers arrived for their Back to Basics camp.

Back to Basics camp

Hot on the heels of Viernes scouts, all three beaver colonies met at Silverwood for an action-packed 26-hour camp. On Saturday morning: beavers took down the scouts’ tents (so they knew how they fold up) before repitching them (so they knew how to put them up). A spot of lunch and then the beavers started working their way around eight bases: firewood collection, fire-lighting, axe skills, knife skills, backwoods cooking, knots and pioneering, pictures from natural material and shelter building.

(Look out for another post soon with lots of pictures from the camp)

Laser tag

Both Enigma and Wibbles went to Laser Tag @ Tankersley this week.

Cycle ready beavers

Our Millstones colony headed to Cycle Penistone for the evening to learn about bike maintenance, safety and oodles of other useful cycling facts. Don’t believe us? Test your beaver!

Sorry – haven’t got a photo!

Also this week, but we were so excited we didn’t get a photograph to share:

  • Explorers walked from Scout Dyke back to Penistone (via the chippy)!
  • Bella Vista played cricket and had BBQ burgers
  • The Jamboree contingent packed bags in Tesco to continue their fundraising activities towards the World Scout Jamboree in 2019

And finally:

Race night – family event (fundraiser)

Our jamboree unit is hosting a race night at the Scout Hut later in the month. You’ve not long to book your tickets. Please see the following page for full details!
