Rewind: #14 – our week, recapped, plus reminders/bonus materials

Each Sunday, we take a look back over our week of Scouting. Recapping and linking back to posts of the week. Alongside this, we’ll share some additional content that didn’t necessarily make it in the initial cut; we'll usually supplement important info for the coming week too.
Apologies that this is out a day late!

Reminders & key information:

Beavers

Castors – Tuesday beavers are meeting at Penistone Fire Station at 17:30. Due to the earlier start, the meeting will finish at 18:30.

Boomers -Wednesday beaver meeting is as normal, at the usual time at the scout hut.

Millstones – Our Friday beavers are heading to Stocksbridge Leisure Centre to try their hands at zorbing. Full details can be found on the following dedicated event page. Please note that this is on Wednesday and not Friday. Parents/Guardians need to remain at the Leisure Centre to help their youngster out with getting changed. There won’t be a Friday meeting.

Cubs

Weekly meetings – all meetings as normal, at their usual times at their usual locations.

Space centre – Saturday 10th March will see Barnsley District Cubs heading to the Space Centre in Leicester. 08:00 drop off at Penistone Grammar School. We are sharing a bus with Silkstone cubs. Shauna is our bus lead. Collection of kids from the Grammar School at 18:00. Please make sure you park sensibly so not to cause any issues for the coach coming/going. Event page here. We have media at the event – if you don’t already follow the Barnsley District pages, perhaps add them to your social followings. (Twitter/Facebook). Cubs should be wearing their uniform and have with them a packed lunch, please.

Scouts/Explorers

All meetings are at their usual time and at their usual locations.

Viernes, please wrap up warm for your Friday meeting. You’ll be outside for most of the session.

Poland meeting – Parents/Guardians are invited to please attend a meeting about next year’s trip to Poland. The trip is open to scouts from all our scout troops and explorers who will be aged 12 and over at Easter 2019. The meeting will be at the Scout Hut from 19:30.

Everyone

A Mother’s Day tea will be held at the scout hut between 15:00 and 17:00 on Saturday 10th March. To book a place, please refer to the following dedicated event page. Monies raised from this will help support young people attending the 2019 World Scout Jamboree in the USA.

Leaders

The 12th March sees the next leader meeting. With, at the time of writing, this being 8 days away, we’re hoping this timely reminder will enable as many of you as possible to please attend our meeting.

With the reminders out of the way, let’s recap the week and see the additional footage.

This week:

Snowmageddon

Due to the delightful weather, we saw a host of cancelled or postponed section meetings this week. We always try to keep section nights on, even in the poorer weather; however, similar to schools we need to make sure we’ve sufficient adult support and we mitigate the risk of injury etc.

Farm to fork

Our beaver scouts were meant to be enjoying the farm to fork experience at Penistone Tesco; however, due to the adverse weather, we had to postpone. Tuesday’s snowfall was quite sudden and therefore some beavers had already made their way to the store. Big thanks to Tesco for entertaining the few who still made it.

Slides, snowballs, and an open fire

Bella Vista cubs (Thursday) still held a section meeting this week, albeit a different programme to the one planned. Half a dozen cubs made it to the scout hut, so we built a fire, had a snowball fight (or twenty) and used baking trays and makeshift sledges.

Car park

Thank you to those who came to the scout hut on Friday evening. We managed to get at least half of the car park cleared of snow and ice. Additionally, all the paths and access points were all completely cleared. That backbreaking work is never going to be the top of anyone’s Friday night plans, so we doff Bruce’s ginormous furry hat in your general direction.
